What, Why, How: Lisa Orchard

August 11, 2016 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

Lisa Orchard, author of teen and YA storiesWhat?

Before I became an author I was an Insurance Agent for thirteen years. I met people from all walks of life and gathered all kinds of material for my stories. I’ve known I wanted to be a writer ever since fifth grade, but it wasn’t until I decided to stay home with my kids that I began to pursue publication.

My first novel The Super Spies and the Cat Lady Killer is the story of three quirky teens who discover the dead body of the Cat Lady and how they bring the killer to justice. There are two other books in the series, The Super Spies and the High School Bomber and The Super Spies and the Pied Piper.

These are awesome stories for the upper middle grade market. They’re edgy thrillers that keep the reader turning the page.

I also have another series available for the Young Adult Market. This series is The Starlight Chronicles, and it’s the coming of age story of Lark Singer and the obstacles she must overcome to pursue her musical dreams. There are three books available in this series as well.

Why?

I write because I want to inspire kids to follow their dreams. I enjoy conducting writing workshops where I introduce kids to my work. These kids are so eager to learn and it’s so rewarding to teach them how to start their stories. They’re so creative, it amazes me.

I also want kids to love reading. It warms my heart when I hear from the mother of a reluctant reader, and she tells me my books turned her daughter on to reading. It’s an incredible feeling to know you’ve touched someone’s life in such a positive way.

How?

I started writing in fifth grade, but again I didn’t pursue publication until I stayed home with my kids. I write whenever I can. I work part time at the local high school library and my boys keep me busy with their activities, so I write around those things. My favorite time to write is first thing in the morning, when the house is quiet because everyone else is still asleep. I get quite a bit done at that time.

My favorite place to write is in my living room. I alternate between the couch and the big desk my hubby built for me. I can keep an eye on things and write at the same time in that room. You know how it is when you have kids! 😉

Thanks for taking your time to read my post. If you’re looking for some great reads for your kids, check out my books. They can be found on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and Smashwords.

Bio

Lisa Orchard grew up loving books. She was hooked on books by the fifth grade and even wrote a few of her own. She knew she wanted to be a writer even then. Her first published works are the “Super Spies Series.” These stories revolve around a group of friends who form their own detective squad and the cases they solve. “The Starlight Chronicles,” is the next series Lisa created with musical misfit, Lark Singer as her main character.

Lisa resides in Michigan with her husband, Steve, and two wonderful boys. Currently, she’s working on the next book in the Starlight Chronicles Series along with a few new ideas that may turn into stand-alone novels. When she’s not writing she enjoys spending time with her family, running, hiking, and reading.
