A Neighborhood House Success Story

July 22, 2019 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

Rakeem at Neighborhood House

Homeless

Rakeem came to Neighborhood House 3 weeks ago after being homeless for two years. He had been working in Detroit to pay child support for his 1-year-old daughter until he left the city for his safety and health. Since then, he has been bouncing from his sister’s house to his mother’s house and to his car.

Self-sustainability

Within three weeks of coming to Neighborhood House, Rakeem is no longer living in his car or sleeping on couches. With a security deposit provided by Neighborhood House, he moved into an apartment that will be completely furnished in the next couple of days. The Neighborhood House will continue to provide food assistance, clothing and job opportunities for him, and he is also enrolled in our financial focus class.

Rakeem is a humble, grateful, down-to-earth person who fell into unfortunate circumstances. Since coming to Neighborhood House, he is now on the road to living a better life. We are so proud of the work he has done in the past three weeks, and look forward to seeing him flourish.

Neighborhood House

Neighborhood House (legally Rochester Area Neighborhood House Inc.) is a nonprofit human service organization that assists our neighbors in times of hardship. We collaborate with the community and other social service providers to help those in financial crisis work toward self-sustainability. Neighborhood House assists families and individuals move toward long-term success through rent and utility financial assistance, food, clothing, counseling, a bike program, transportation services, educational classes such as financial education, budgeting help, job coaching, resume building, parenting classes and computer literacy skills training. Neighborhood House believes that neighbors helping neighbors is the model of a strong community.

To get help with food, clothing or for any other type of assistance, please see our Get Help page. We service neighbors in the Michigan communities of Rochester, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Oakland Township and Leonard.

Wow, this sounds like a great charity. Thanks for telling us about it. I love hearing about all of the hard work people put into helping others during hard times. I hope Rakeem and his family are doing well now.
