Out of print!
My friend Denise wanted to buy a copy of my latest poetry chapbook, Security, after hearing me read from it at a DWW ONTV event. That’s when I discovered I only had two copies.
This posed a real problem: the publisher, Rob Bixby of March Street Press in Greensboro NC, passed away a few years ago, and there were no plans to continue the press.
This little chapbook is very dear to me. It was published in 2010. Several poems refer to my son, who died in 2011, as well as my father who died in 2013. My mixed media art is on the cover; Rob designed the awesome cover text. Two other prints of my artwork are featured inside.
And all I had left were two copies!
Glimmer of hope
Then I remembered: although Rob designed and printed the covers for the poetry and fiction books he published through March Street Press, he contracted Main Street Rag, another publisher in North Carolina, to print and bind the books. Maybe there was a chance…
Ten days later
I emailed M. Scott Douglass, the publisher at Main Street Rag, and indeed, he did have the original files for the inside! Scott told me he could reconstruct the cover from my images. The cover stock would be different, and it wouldn’t have the pretty purple end papers, but to me, those were minor issues.
Would you believe I had a box of books ten days after I first contacted Scott? TEN DAYS!
As an author, we take chances with small presses. They come and they go. At the same time, small presses often go above and beyond to help authors. The small press that published my novel was absolutely fabulous, and when they shut their doors to publishing, they did everything to set me up with my books through Ingram and Amazon. It all worked out fine, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Main Street Rag did everything to set me up with more copies, and I’m not even one of their authors.
That’s pretty special.
