What, Why, How: A.J. Norris

August 24, 2016 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

paranormal romance suspense author AJ NorrisWhat?

I write paranormal romance and romantic suspense. Currently, I have the first book in my paranormal series out and the second is releasing August 23, 2016. The first book in the Dark Amulet series is called Her Black Wings and features a less than law-abiding woman in her early twenties that is murdered, but before her death she saves a little kid and earns a chance at redemption. Along the way she falls in love with the angel sent to help her, who struggles with his own problems. The idea came from a short story I wrote about a dark angel. She screamed at me to write her book. She wanted the world to know her real story. The second book in the series, Her Black Heart, features a different heroine and hero.

I have a romantic suspense coming out on October 18, 2016 titled Tattoo Killer about a tattoo artist whose accused of murder. I originally wrote it as a stand-alone and can be read that way, but I have a sequel planned.

Why?

Once I started writing I couldn’t stop. I consider it a life calling and I must write or go crazy. The older I get the more anxiety I seem to have and writing helps calm my nerves. I guess you could say it soothes me or it’s like an itch I have to scratch. Sometimes I’m not sure which.

How?

I woke one day and said I’d like to write a book. Seriously. I was in my late thirties. My first novel took me around two years to complete and I’m glad I got it out of my system. Since writing that book, I feel I’ve grown as a writer. At first, I didn’t understand how to handle POV properly, characterization, or what an info dump was. I threw myself into learning about the writing craft. I joined two critic groups and RWA and my local chapter.

The next step I took was to write as much as I could. I wrote countless short stories in attempt to hone my skills. I started and tossed out several manuscripts before I got my butt in gear and wrote Her Black Wings. I didn’t plan on writing a series about angels and demons; it just worked out that way. I love paranormal romance and wanted to write what I love.

Bio

A.J. Norris is a romantic suspense and paranormal romance novelist who began writing as a way to dim the voices inside her head. She enjoys being able to get inside someone else’s head, even a fictional one, to see what they see. Watching how her characters deal with difficult situations or squirm with the uncomfortable ones make the hard work of writing all worth it. She is a movie buff, especially book adaptations, loves watching her son play baseball and communing with other writers.  She lives with her family who are extremely tolerant (at least most of the time) of all her late nights behind the computer.
