The Zen of Standing Desks

May 21, 2018 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

Before:

My old desk was one of those Sauder build-it-yourself jobs that come in a million little pieces. You know the kind: make one mistake in assembly and you’ll be pulling your hair out along with the brackets. The drawer and bottom cupboard (where an upright PC would go) were wasted space, and the desk itself didn’t give me much room to spread out. Note: this photo does not accurately show the mess of papers and sticky-notes that the work area had become! I felt boxed in when I sat down to write in front of the hutch.

After:

my new UPLIFT standing desk

Now I have an adjustable standing desk.

My new set up feels fresh and open. I can stand, lean, or sit with the touch of a button.

The bamboo top stand up desk I have is 48″ long by 36″ wide, and it rises from 25″ to 50-1/2″, so I can go from sitting with the keyboard at a comfortable level to standing. Being able to make minute adjustments was important to me because I have mild carpal tunnel syndrome. Most desks were too high for me to work with my laptop without neck and wrist issues. This desk goes just low enough.

My standard desk chair has been replaced by a Motion Stool, which can also be raised up and down. It has a weighted bottom and allows motion in all directions. My monitor is on an adjustable arm, which frees up desk space.

Assembly required

Assembling the UPLIFT wasn’t difficult, according to my handy husband who put the whole thing together when I was out. The company has an online video for those who find themselves all thumbs. It wasn’t too heavy, either. The two of us easily carried the two boxes upstairs (one for the base, the other for the bamboo desk).

Sitzfleisch is the ability to sit still and get through the task at hand; it’s the difference between an aspiring writer and a writer. While I believe int getting through the task at hand, I like not being limited to sitting on my butt while I write (who wants to die like Balzac?) Feeling enthused about my workspace is motivating. It feels right. Write. Zen-ish — in a state of calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort.
.
I believe in taking advantage of all you can when you write. It’s a hard enough job as it is. It’s also important to respect the work we do by investing in ourselves as writers. Don’t we deserve the best?

Standing Desk Reviews

Consumers Advocate recently posted the Best of Standing Desks 2020. They evaluate the following standing desk features: starting price, height range, lift capacity, lift speed, and warranty. The website states they will update information as it comes available. The review highlights an Uplift desk, same manufacturer as mine, and they also include a desk that’s raised by a hand crank. Thank you, Consumers Advocate!
