After too many midday rides with the sun in my eyes, I crafted a visor for my bicycle helmet. It was easier than I thought, and all it cost me was a dollar.

My visor attaches with three elastic straps and Velcro, and it tucks under the existing plastic visor on the helmet. This is my helmet:

If you don’t have access to a sewing machine, you could hand stitch pieces of ribbon instead of elastic, and simply thread it through the helmet like I did, and tie it on the underside. My aim was to make something removable, so I avoided using hot glue (does hot glue even hold fabric? I don’t know!)

All you need is a cap

Get yourself a cheap baseball cap, one you won’t mind cutting up. If you make a mistake or find the cap is too small or big, you won’t be out a lot of money. I picked up this one for a buck from the local resale shop. I chose it because it matched the helmet colors.

Completely cut away the entire cap so all you’re left with is the visor. I used a zigzag stitch all around the cut part so that it wouldn’t fray, but it isn’t really necessary.

I sewed three pieces of elastic to the visor: a long one at the center, and smaller pieces at each end.

HYou can see where I sewed Velcro to the underside of the visor and on the elastic to attach the bands to the helmet.

I slipped the visor up under the helmet’s visor, and threaded the elastic through the vent holes to the underside. 

That’s all there is to it

As I wrote earlier, you could also hand sew ribbon, or shoe string, or anything to your visor that you can thread through the helmet vents and tie underneath. The main thing is to get the visor tucked in snug between the helmet and the existing plastic visor on the helmet.
