Yet another Wardrobe Guide “for Your Age”

Every so often, an article pops up in my feed that promises to enlighten me on how to “dress after 65.” This week’s gem: How to Dress Minimalist After 65.

I can relate to wanting to be more minimalist and intentional about what I wear. I love fun clothes. In fact, I happen to have way too many of them. But lately, whenever I get the urge to go shopping, I often think, “Oh, hell no.” I seriously don’t even know what I’d buy anymore.

But I do know what I don’t like. And apparently, it’s everything this article recommended.

The so-called big “hack”

There it was, the minimalist hack: a structured jacket (ew), a crisp white shirt (I look like a ghost in white), and dark jeans paired with impossible high heels. I stared at those photos and thought, if this is minimalist style, I’ll stay maximalist, thanks.

Define neutral

Here’s something else I thought was funny: “One of the keys to a minimalist wardrobe is sticking to a neutral color palette. Classic colors like black, white, gray, and navy are versatile and timeless. These hues can be easily mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.”

That was followed by this collection of images:

Do those any of these colors look neutral to you? An argyle sweater in cream, lavender, blue and orange with purple pants and a red handbag? A chartreuse blouse and forest green jacket with a leopard print skirt and white handbag? Not to mention I wouldn’t wear any of these outfits.

And the featured accessories below scream 1980s congresswoman to me. Cream and beige? Who still wears circle pins on blazers?

FAQ add up to eh, whatever

I understand “invest in quality,” “focus on fit,” “embrace simplicity” and “mix and match,” but these frequently asked questions undercut the whole point of the article with an anything goes attitude:

  • Choose quality leggings, pair them with a tunic or longer top, add layers, choose the right shoes, and accessorize as desired.
  • Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

I laughed out loud. That’s a 1,000-word recipe for boiling water. After paragraphs of patronizing minimalism, that’s the big takeaway? I could’ve saved five minutes and read my own closet.

Here’s my version of Dressing Over 65:

Fewer clothes, more joy. I wear what I love. The colors that make me happy. The things that feel good on my skin and in my spirit. Comfort isn’t the afterthought; it’s the whole point.

If you love it, wear it. If it makes you feel alive, wear more of it. Minimalist, maximalist, sparkly, slouchy—there’s no expiration date on style. The only truly timeless look is confidence.
