Toast to 2024

January 1, 2024 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

Resolutions, anyone?

I generally don’t make New Year’s resolutions. Why set myself up for failure?

.

That said, I like fitness coach Joan McDonald’s philosophy:

“Your future you is depending on you to keep the promises you made to yourself today. If you want to build up confidence in yourself, you’ve got to start practicing making decisions and taking action today! Start with the little things, and be determined that no matter what challenges come your way, you will find a way to get through them. Be a woman who keeps her promises.”

Joan Macdonald, age 77, @trainwithjoan on Instagram

Joan is a great motivator. Seriously, take a look at her Instagram and be amazed. She’s buff and beautiful, and doesn’t hide her wrinkles or color her hair, either. The only problem: when I see her bench press 150 pounds or more, sometimes I feel like a feeb. How does she do that? I’ll never be able to do that.

Does it matter? No. I do what I can and feel good about it.

Let’s get real

Personally, I like this advice from Charlie Brown: “You know how I always dread the whole year? Well this time I’m only going to dread one day at a time.”

I can get behind one day at a time.

Here’s something more inspiring: “Let our New Year’s resolution be this: We will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word.” —Göran Persson

Whether or not you make or break resolutions, my wish for you for 2024 is prosperity and good health. My hope for 2024 is to spread kindness. Read more books. Write something. Walk in the woods. Breathe deep.

I also follow someone who talks about our ‘Future Self’ a lot, and I find that very motivating. My Future Self will thank me . . . and then finish with whatever choice I am considering making at the time. It’s not 100% yet, but I would estimate about half the time I remember to repeat that mantra and make a better choice. Good luck in 2024!

That’s a good philosophy- my future self. Thank you for sharing that! Happy New Year Lissa!
