What, Why, How: John Smolinski

WHAT?

Hiker, percussionist, digital art photography, poet, painter. Have had poetry and prose, digital photos published in various ‘zines, compilations and art/literature journals. A few paintings bought by appreciative souls. Performed percussion from street musician/busker to professionally for thousands. Worn out many a hiking boot on the dusty trail!
WHY?
I’m passionate about all-the-above. Hardest task was time-management for all so I adopted a philosophy of flow and zone; whichever passion grabs me or presents an opportunity, I go with it, no self-judging. My approach to any of my artistic endeavors has always been one of DO IT and revise or adjust later. I drummed, wrote verse, painted from the heart before I ever took instruction in technique, later adding percussion, writing, painting classes to enhance my skills, but never forgetting to FOLLOW YOUR HEART with the beat, pen or brush. First thought best thought; polish the gem later. First and foremost I engage in creativity for myself. Any fruit it bears later through achievement or acknowledgment is icing on the cake.
HOW?
In 2014 I decided to abandon the rat-race and live life as a creative full time. No one said it would be easy ‘living the dream’, that’s where creativity also plays an important role. I pared down my lifestyle, cost-of-living and simplified. I now live in the high desert of Eastern California where my hiking passion can be fulfilled right outside my front door and inspiration for writing, digital photography and painting is always present. Fine musicians abound here in the Joshua Tree area, as well as writers and artists, so opportunities to play music abound. Each day I count my blessings.
