What, Why, How: Colleen Nye

September 21, 2016 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

Colleen Nye, author and publisher of anthologiesWhat?

I am a fiction writer, biographer as well as owner of Blue Deco Publishing. Eventually, I hope to have a regular, syndicated column, but I’m pretty happy being a novelist as well. I can not stick with one genre – having published works in dystopian, tech thriller, romcom, romance, crime drama, paranormal and sci-fi. And honestly, I prefer it that way. My interests are spread about, so why limit my creativity?

Why?

I write fiction because I have a LOT of worlds swimming around in my mind. To the average person, this sounds crazy, but other artists understand… My characters demand to be heard. They want their stories told. And I’m more than happy to oblige.

I wrote the biography portion of a book of a biker/former federal prison inmate. In the same way that I enjoy telling my characters’ stories, when a real life person strikes me as interesting, it’s always fun to know that others can learn about them as well. So, I was happy to be a part of that project.

I am a publisher because… well… I don’t know, really. It fell into my lap, and I’m just starting to run with it. It’s been a wild ride, and it’s developed a reason for me: I love when an author gets so very excited to know they’re finally published. To authors, our books our like a part of us. And not having them published is like caging that part of us in a dark, cold, lonely room. To be the reason that a part of someone is set free to be out there and to see others enjoy their works? Yeah, it’s a lot uplifting to me.

How?

I work a LOT. I also have a tablet with a hinged keyboard so i can work from anywhere… oh, and a very large backup battery that goes with me as well. But the biggest “how” is that I love what I do. So it’s easy some days to go ‘Wow, it’s three in the morning. I’ve been at my desk for eighteen hours!” Haha!

Bio

As a teen, Colleen Nye won awards for her poetry and short stories, including a Sarah Endres Award for Young Writers. As an adult, in addition to her books, she’s had short stories published in Writing at the Ledges’ second and third anthologies, Seasons of Life and Voices from the Ledges.

In 2012, she published her first book in The Unattainable Series titled When in Maui, a romantic comedy. In 2015, When in Maui moved to Blue Deco Publishing along with her second novel, Immersion, a dystopian tech thriller. In 2016, Blue Deco released the first book in an anthology series titled The Lunch Time Anthologies. The anthologies are full length novels written by different authors embedded into a storyline written by Colleen. The first title is Gable Heights, a crime drama.

Also in 2016, she released The Unattainable Series: Book Two, titled When in Doubt, and a coming of age drama titled The Long Summer. She is also co-leading and appearing in each of the 5 books in an anthology series called The Debut Collective. Working on two series, sci-fi and fantasy, and book three in The Unattainable Series, she is busy writing every day.

Colleen also writes press releases and content for newspapers, magazines and online blogs, web sites and more, makes book covers and book trailers. Oh, and she is the proud owner of Blue Deco Publishing.
