What, Why, How: Heather Duerre Humann

July 2, 2016 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

What:

While my piece that appears in Idol Talk is a personal essay (where I write about the 1990s, my Pixies obsession, and Fight Club, among other  other topics), most of my writing could be be best classified as Academic Nonfiction. To date, I’ve published three books: Domestic Abuse in the Novels of African American Women: A Critical Study (McFarland, 2014), Gender Bending Detective Fiction: A Critical Analysis of Selected Works (McFarland, 2017), and Another Me: The Doppelgänger in 21st Century Fiction, Television and Film (McFarland, 2018).
I’ve also published a number of articles (mainly in academic journals), essays, short stories, and book reviews.

Why:

I’ve always found writing to be both a great way for me to express myself and a way for me to process and make sense of the world.

How:

I feel fortunate to have a full-time teaching career which also allows me to devote part of my time to writing and research. I currently teach full time in the Department of Language and Literature Florida Gulf Coast University (and I’ve previously taught at two other colleges). I definitely also credit my experiences in grad school with helping me hone my writing and research skills. Finally, I also feel that the many great editors I’ve worked with over the years have played a role in helping me develop my writing.
