What, Why, How: Multi-genre YA Author A.L. Sirois

June 9, 2025 By Linda K Sienkiewicz

A man with beard and mustache wearing black eyeglasses and a tan cap.

What:

I write in several genres: science fiction, mainstream fiction, fantasy, historical, YA, Middle Grade, mystery, horror, comic book scripts. Historical and contemporary settings, as well as some in the future. I made my first story sale in 1974, shortly followed by another. My first book was, oddly enough, a children’s book, Dinosaur Dress Up, published in 1992. Since then, I’ve published several other books, mostly science fiction, fantasy, and horror. I’ve also ghostwritten more than a dozen works of science fiction, fantasy, memoirs, and cozy mysteries. My short story “In the Conservatory” was nominated for the Pushcart Prize. In addition to being a writer and an artist, am a former rock and jazz drummer, and performed in bands for 50 years. I formerly had a career in corporate America as a web guy but am now retired.

Beginning in 2024, Regal House began publishing my trilogy of YA books set in ancient Egypt. The first book is titled Murder in Mennefer. The second book, Imhotep and the Quest to Kush, is due out in June of 2025.

A few years ago, I wrote, inked and lettered a 124-page graphic novel, The Endless Incident. I have worked for DC, Marvel, Charlton, and Warren Publications. I contributed “Bugs in the System” to witzend #12. Between 1975 and 1980, I worked for Wallace Wood and other DC and Marvel artists, including Dick Giordano, Bob Layton, and Frank McLaughlin. I inked backgrounds for Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Hercules Unbound, PLOP!, Stalker, Justice League of America, All Star Comics (Justice Society of America), X-Men, and Champions, among other titles, including the one-shot Superman vs. Muhammed Ali.

Why:

Because I can, I guess? Seriously, I like to tell stories, and the ideas just. Keep. Coming. With any luck, this state of affairs will continue indefinitely.

How:

I started teaching myself to type when I was about 8. I wrote everything prior to about 1984 on typewriters, but then I switched to computers. Yay! I now work on an iMac. I like to write in the morning, before the dull cares of the day infiltrate my conscious mind. I started out as a pantser, but after about 1975 I switched to outlining and I now outline everything, from short stories to novels.

I love doing research and can happily bury myself in information for days at a time. I have gotten to the point of writing smarter and more carefully than when I was young, so although I am prolific, I rarely do more than three or four drafts of anything. I tend to let a first draft sit for up to a month before I return to do edits. An idea of my speed under differing circumstances: I once wrote a 100K first draft of a fantasy book in six weeks; but it also took me twenty years to finish the draft of an historical fantasy book, including research and note-taking. These things take as long as they take, but all writers know this.

About Murder in Mennefer: “A tense, suspense-filled novel that digs deep into popular Egyptology. What couldn’t Imhotep do? He built pyramids, practiced medicine, became deified, but as a teenager he solved crimes. A feast for literary YA historical fiction and crime-solving minds alike that also begs the question, what can’t author Sirois do?”—Chris Bauer, author of two series: Max Fender Maximum Risk series and Blessid Trauma Crime Scene Cleaners series
